Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Coffee Cake

There’s something special about the recipes that feel like they came straight from an old family recipe box. This Old-Fashioned Sour Cream Coffee Cake is simple, cozy and perfect with a hot cup of coffee.

Sour cream keeps the cake soft and tender while a cinnamon brown sugar pecan mixture runs through the middle and covers the top. No fancy glaze or extra fuss needed.

Ingredients

For the Cake

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

For the Cinnamon Pecan Topping

  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together. Beat in the eggs and vanilla, then stir in the sour cream.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir just until combined.
  4. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, cinnamon and chopped pecans.
  5. Spread half of the batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with half of the cinnamon pecan mixture.
  6. Spread the remaining batter over the top and finish with the remaining cinnamon pecan mixture.
  7. Bake for 35–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.
