Red, White & Blue Dot Cakes

Prep Time: 25 minutes
Bake Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 6–8 individual dot cakes

Ingredients

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • Ingredients called for on the cake mix box (typically water, oil, and eggs)
  • 1 (16 oz) can vanilla frosting
  • 1 cup red, white & blue nonpareil sprinkles
  • 6–8 clear 8-ounce dessert cups with lids
  • Optional: extra sprinkles for between the cake layers

Instructions

Prepare the white cake according to the package directions and bake in a greased 9×13-inch baking pan. Allow the cake to cool completely.

Using a round cookie cutter or the opening of your dessert cups as a guide, cut circles from the cooled cake that fit inside each container.

Spoon or pipe a thin layer of vanilla frosting into the bottom of each cup.

Add one cake round, then spread or pipe a layer of frosting over the top.

Repeat with another cake layer and frosting until each cup has two cake layers and two frosting layers.

Smooth the top layer of frosting with an offset spatula or the back of a spoon.

Generously cover the entire top with red, white & blue nonpareil sprinkles, gently pressing them into the frosting so every bit of frosting is covered.

Place lids on the cups and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving for the best texture.

Tips

  • Use bakery-style clear dessert cups for the authentic viral look.
  • A piping bag makes the frosting layers cleaner and more professional.
  • Chill before serving so the layers hold their shape.
  • These are perfect to make the day before your party.
  • Decorate with a tiny American flag pick if desired.
