Christmas Crack

Christmas Crack is one of those easy Christmas treats that disappears almost as quickly as you can break it into pieces. Crisp saltine crackers are covered with buttery brown sugar toffee and a layer of melted chocolate for the perfect combination of sweet, salty and crunchy.

It’s an easy addition to Christmas cookie trays, treat boxes and holiday parties because you can make a big batch with just a handful of ingredients. Add pecans, Christmas sprinkles or a little flaky sea salt on top, then break it into pieces once it’s chilled and try not to eat half the pan before you package it up.

Servings: About 24 pieces
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Bake Time: 5 minutes
Chill Time: 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 40 saltine crackers, approximately
  • 1 cup salted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cup milk chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans, optional
  • Christmas sprinkles, optional
  • Flaky sea salt, optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil, then lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer, placing them closely together to cover the bottom of the pan.
  3. Add the butter and brown sugar to a medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth.
  4. Bring to a full boil. Once boiling, cook for 3 minutes without stirring.
  5. Remove from heat and carefully stir in the vanilla and salt.
  6. Immediately and carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the crackers. The mixture will be extremely hot, so pour slowly and take care to avoid touching or splashing it. Use a heat-safe spatula to gently spread it all the way to the edges.
  7. Bake for 5 minutes, until the toffee is bubbling all over.
  8. Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle the semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips evenly over the top. Let sit for 3 to 4 minutes to soften.
  9. Spread the melted chocolate into an even layer. Sprinkle with chopped pecans, Christmas sprinkles or a tiny amount of flaky sea salt, if desired.
  10. Let cool, then refrigerate for about 1 hour, or until completely firm.
  11. Break into irregular pieces and serve.

Good to Know

Let the brown sugar and butter come to a true bubbling boil before starting the 3-minute timer. This helps the toffee set properly instead of staying soft or separating.

Store Christmas Crack in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week or refrigerate for a firmer, extra-crunchy texture.
