A simple Southern dessert made famous by Steel Magnolias. This nostalgic recipe comes together with just three ingredients and bakes into a sweet, old-fashioned cake that’s perfect served warm with vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
- 1 cup self-rising flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 (15-ounce) can fruit cocktail, undrained
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- Lightly grease an 8×8-inch baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, stir together the self-rising flour and sugar.
- Add the entire can of fruit cocktail, including all of the juice. Stir just until combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 40–50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cake is bubbling around the edges.
- Let cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
Optional Add-Ins
- Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar before baking.
- Fold in ½ cup chopped pecans.
