Prep Time: 15 minutes
Bake Time: 45–50 minutes
Servings: 8–10
Ingredients
Casserole
- 1 loaf (14–16 oz) French bread, cut into 1-inch cubes (slightly stale is best)
- 8 large eggs
- 1½ cups whole milk
- ¼ cup heavy whipping cream
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp melted butter
Cinnamon Streusel Topping
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 6 tbsp cold butter, cubed
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- Spread the bread cubes evenly into the prepared dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and melted butter until smooth.
- Slowly pour the custard over the bread, gently pressing the bread down with a spatula so every piece absorbs some of the mixture. Let it rest for 10–15 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in the cold butter with a fork or pastry cutter until coarse crumbs form.
- Sprinkle the streusel evenly over the casserole.
- Bake for 45–50 minutes, until the center is set and the top is golden brown with a crisp cinnamon topping.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Optional Toppings
- Warm maple syrup
- Powdered sugar
- Fresh strawberries
- Blueberries
- Candied pecans
- Whipped cream
Misty’s Tip
For the best texture, use bread that’s one day old. It absorbs the custard beautifully while baking up soft inside with lightly crisp edges.
