Midnight Margarita

Dark, fruity and just a little mysterious, this Midnight Margarita is the perfect cocktail for Halloween parties, fall nights or anytime you want something a little more fun than a classic margarita. Fresh blackberries give it that gorgeous deep purple color while lime, tequila and orange liqueur keep it bright and refreshing.

And despite how impressive it looks, it’s incredibly easy to make.

Why You’ll Love This Midnight Margarita

This blackberry margarita has everything I want in a cocktail: it’s pretty, simple and made with ingredients you can actually find.

The blackberries give it a naturally dark, moody color without needing food coloring, while fresh lime keeps it from becoming overly sweet. It’s festive enough for Halloween but not so themed that you can’t make it all year long.

Ingredients

For 1 margarita:

  • 4–5 fresh blackberries
  • 2 ounces silver tequila
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • ¾ ounce Cointreau or triple sec
  • ¾ ounce blackberry simple syrup
  • ½ ounce agave nectar, optional
  • Ice
  • Coarse sugar or salt for the rim, optional
  • Fresh blackberries and a lime wheel, for garnish

For the Blackberry Simple Syrup

  • ½ cup fresh blackberries
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup water

How to Make Blackberry Simple Syrup

Add the blackberries, sugar and water to a small saucepan.

Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved. Lightly mash the blackberries as they soften.

Remove from the heat and let the mixture cool slightly. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer, pressing gently on the berries to release the syrup.

Let the syrup cool completely before using.

How to Make a Midnight Margarita

If you’re using a sugar or salt rim, run a lime wedge around the edge of a rocks glass and dip the rim into your choice of coarse sugar or salt.

Add the fresh blackberries to a cocktail shaker and gently muddle.

Pour in the tequila, fresh lime juice, Cointreau and blackberry simple syrup. Add the agave if you prefer a sweeter margarita.

Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds.

Strain into the prepared glass filled with fresh ice.

Garnish with fresh blackberries and a lime wheel.

Serve immediately and enjoy!

Tips for the Best Midnight Margarita

Use fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice just doesn’t have the same bright flavor.

Adjust the sweetness. Taste before adding the agave. Depending on your blackberries and syrup, you may not need it at all.

Make the syrup ahead. The blackberry simple syrup can be made in advance and refrigerated in an airtight container until you’re ready for margaritas.

Want a darker color? Add an extra blackberry or two when muddling rather than using artificial coloring.

Make It for a Halloween Party

The deep blackberry color makes this an easy Halloween cocktail without needing anything gimmicky. Serve it in short cocktail glasses with blackberry and lime garnishes for a moody drink that still feels grown-up and pretty.

You can also make the blackberry syrup ahead of time so all you have to do when guests arrive is shake and pour.
