How to Make Packet Gravy Taste Homemade

I love a good shortcut, especially when you can take something simple from the pantry and make it taste like you spent way more time on it than you actually did. And that is exactly what we’re doing with a packet of brown gravy mix.

The biggest trick is swapping the water for beef broth. Then add a little butter, Worcestershire sauce and a few simple seasonings. I also like adding a splash of heavy cream at the end because it makes the gravy extra rich and smooth.

It takes about the same amount of time as making the packet according to the directions, but it tastes SO much better. Serve it over mashed potatoes, meatloaf, hamburger steaks or anything else that needs a good helping of gravy. Nobody needs to know it started with a packet!

Ingredients

1 packet brown gravy mix
1/2 cup beef broth
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon butter
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
Black pepper, to taste
1 to 2 tablespoons heavy cream, optional

Directions

  1. Add the brown gravy mix, beef broth and water to a small saucepan and whisk together until smooth.
  2. Add the butter, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder and black pepper.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, whisking often.
  4. Reduce the heat and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the gravy is thick and smooth.
  5. Stir in the heavy cream at the end, if using. If the gravy becomes too thick, whisk in a little additional water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  6. Serve warm and enjoy!

Tip: If you’re making this with hamburger steaks or another beef dish, sauté some thinly sliced onions in butter first. Make the gravy right in the same pan with all those browned bits and onions. It’s even better!
