Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- 8 slices thick-cut bread (Texas toast, brioche, or challah)
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter (for cooking)
Optional for Serving
- Maple syrup
- Fresh strawberries or berries
- Powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt until smooth.
- Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, coating both sides without soaking the bread too long.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt a little butter.
- Cook the French toast for 2–3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Repeat with the remaining bread, adding more butter to the pan as needed.
- Serve warm with maple syrup, fresh berries, and a dusting of powdered sugar if desired.
Tips
- Thick-cut bread gives the best texture.
- Day-old bread works especially well because it absorbs the custard without becoming soggy.
- Keep cooked slices warm in a 200°F oven while you finish the batch.
